Glens Falls

Glens Falls grew quickly based on a combination of power and transport from upper Hudson River Valley and raw materials from the foothills of the Adirondacks. Local limestone formed the building blocks for mills sawing lumber and black marble and provided the raw material for "Jointa Lime," and Portland Cement, still an important part of the local economy. In 1832, the Feeder Canal connected Glens Falls to the Champlain Canal and distant markets. Boosted by lumber and paper mills, shirt and collar factories and a lime quarry, the city grew into a regional commercial center following the Civil War.

Today Glens Falls is becoming known as the downtown of the Adirondacks. Historic architecture, art, theater, music, cultural events and festivals, restaurants, and shopping offer a multitude of fun and interesting opportunities.
